CRYSTAL PALACE PROPERTY GUIDE: |
Crystal Palace was once the great Victorian
wonder of London. After the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park,
the entire glass building was dismantled and moved to a new
permanent site on parkland at Sydenham. The destruction of the
building by fire in 1936 left a void in the park that has never
been filled and which, even today, is an ongoing issue of dispute
with environmentalists and the council.
Situated only 8 miles from central London and perched up high,
offering impressive views over the capital, Crystal Palace still
retains a large degree of its impressive Victorian architecture
and character, if slightly worn in places. Westow Hill, a bustling
parade of independent shops and restaurants, provides the area's
focal point with steep roads of Victorian terraces and semi's
sprouting from its lofted position over Southeast London. As
you descend down to Gipsy Hill, housing styles become more mixed
as mid-war terracing and more modern blocks of flats reside
alongside Victorian terraces.
Crystal Palace Park itself remains surrounded by very grand
Victorian Villas, a majority of which have been converted into
flats and apartments, although a trend for refurbishment and
restoration back to single family homes is becoming apparent.
The best of these can be found along Crystal Palace Park Road
heading towards Penge. To the south of the park, Crystal Palace
train station provides a regular service into both London Victoria
and London Bridge.
WHO LIVES HERE? Loyal locals, first time buyers, families
looking for larger houses. |
