Built on reclaimed marshland in the 1960's
by an enthusiastic GLC, Thamesmead still bares the scars with
concrete tower blocks and unimaginative housing that offers
little more than cheap, affordable housing for the first time
buyer on a tight budget. More recent developments fringe the
riverbank in Thamesmead North and plans for a further 2500 homes
at Gallion's Reach are near completion. Shopping facilities
remain sparse yet should benefit from the further developments
planned. Abby wood offers a good stock of Victorian terraces
amongst a large number of council properties.
