SARAH BEENY CAMPAIGNS AGAINST UNFAIR VAT

Sarah Beeny is backing the Federation of Master Builders' campaign to highlight unfair tax on doing up old houses.

"I support the FMB in their campaign to bring the tax breaks for renovating old buildings someway in line with those for new builds," said Channel 4's Property Ladder presenter. "Reducing the VAT from 17.5% to 5% would level out the discrepancy."

Sarah will be speaking at the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show which opens this Thursday. "In this country there's a lack of land, some real environmental concerns and a large number of tired buildings in need of work. There are far more old buildings than green spaces to build new homes on but the current situation encourages people to either knock down old buildings and start again or find land to build from scratch," she said.

During the FMB seminar at the show, Sarah will be looking at ways would-be developers can best finance their projects and how best to prepare for such a project.

The show looks set to welcome 50,000 visitors to see over 450 exhibitors (including 170 new to the show this year) offering everything anyone contemplating a major domestic building project needs to know.

A comprehensive programme of free seminars runs every day of the Show. One of the highlights this year will be when Sarah Beeny joins a panel, hosted by Ian Davies, Director General of the Federation of Master Builders (FMB) discussing the thorny issues of financing any building project.

These unique and informative sessions are always popular with visitors and tickets are issued on a first-come-first-served basis. Seminars this year include making the most of attics and basements as well as energy efficiency and working with sub-contractors.

Many visitors are interested in building with minimum impact on the environment. The Show's Green Village is a dedicated area for visitors to find out first-hand from experts with the latest advice on eco-friendly build products and services.

Finding a suitable plot of land or renovation project is usually the first hurdle for many would-be selfbuilders. Plotfinder and Plotsearch both have databases of thousands of plots and projects for sale and will be joined by other land agencies at the Show.

For those keen to get their hands dirty and save more money, there will be a number of useful and interesting demonstrations from exhibitors, including Wickes. The Wickes Product Demonstrations will be a series of live practical demonstrations on tiling, using limestone and granite floor tiles with a fun against-the-clock challenge as well as using conventional plumbing vs copper 'pushfit' plumbing.

The National Homebuilding & Renovating Show at the NEC, Birmingham, is on from 14 to 17 April 2005. Tickets are £7 each in advance from 0870 906 2002 or £10 on the door. Click on www.homebuildingshow.co.uk for more information.

For the first time, The Smart Home Show will run alongside the National Homebuilding & Renovating Show. This will be the UK’s first consumer exhibition dedicated to the new building and design movement - integrated home technology. The Show will feature the latest ‘smart home’ solutions in the four key demand areas of home entertainment, networking and communications, heat & light and security.
