 HOUSING MARKET CONFIDENCE REMAINS STABLE

Consumer confidence in the housing market remained stable in May with 49% of people believing that their property will increase in value over the next 12 months, reveals a confidence index out this week.

However confidence still remains significantly below the level for this time last year when confidence was at 67%.

Andy Gray, head of mortgages at Barclays and Woolwich, says, "Confidence in the housing market has been improving for the past six months and looks to be stabilising, continued interest rate stability will no doubt help to maintain and improve confidence in the market."

The South West and London saw the greatest increase in confidence this month with a rise of 4% and 3% respectfully. Confidence fell in the North East, Yorkshire, the East, South East and the North West.

Confidence figures are combined on a rolling three-month basis to smooth monthly variations in confidence levels. However, as confidence levels are measured on a monthly basis these figures provide a useful indication on future trends in people’s confidence.
